Resolution, while dramatically improved, still cannot reproduce fine material textures — the difference between linen and cotton, or honed versus polished marble, is lost in current VR.
For most cosmetic updates — new paint, different furniture, updated accessories — high-quality 2D AI renders are sufficient and far more accessible. VR adds the most value when spatial relationships are critical: open-plan reconfigurations, multi-room flow, staircase placement, or any change where "how it feels to be in the space" matters more than "how it looks in a photo."
The near future: spatial computing goes mainstream
The trajectory points toward VR and AR design visualization becoming routine within three to five years. Headset prices will continue to drop. Lightweight AR glasses will replace bulky headsets.
